A woman feels cheated after she was promised marriage but left instead with a broken relationship.

The woman, who went into full detail about her failed romance on Reddit’s “Waiting_to_Wed” subreddit, explained that she and her boyfriend were both very intentional about getting married from the beginning, but she wanted to get married within 1.5 years, while he wanted to wait 3 years.

As the two approached the mutually agreed 2-year mark, the woman said her boyfriend “repeatedly reassured” her that he was ready, and the two openly discussed wanting children.

“He said he was comfortable with the idea of getting married within a year after engagement, so we could begin planning for children in a timeframe that made sense for both of us – after a year of just us 2 as a married couple,” the woman claimed.

Things weren’t always easy: the two “argued every few weeks,” and their arguments “could get quite volatile,” but he reassured her that it was a “normal part of relationships.”

“Usually I’d get frustrated when I felt he was being selfish or neglecting the relationship, and he’d get upset about how I expressed myself,” the woman claimed.

Still, the woman said that the man assured her that he was “happy with his decision to commit” and “confidently” talked about their future.

As their engagement month approached, the man took the woman ring shopping and “everything seemed on track.”

Even though things seemingly began to occur — his mom was diagnosed with MS and his aunt was diagnosed with cancer — the man never said he wanted to delay anything and met the woman’s whole family and community, which culturally signifies a “serious commitment.”

While at one point he said that ring production was delayed, causing the proposal to be pushed by 3 months, the woman was ok with that until “everything changed overnight.”

She claimed that her boyfriend’s parents didn’t think they were ready to get married because they heard them argue once, “and even said they wouldn’t have married each other if they’d known each other better.”

Although the man initially defended the woman, she claimed that “literally the next day,” he admitted he “felt anxious” and “needed more time.”

“He told me he’d been saying yes to everything to keep me happy, hadn’t fully thought things through, and had been pushing down doubts for a year. He said he had concerns based on our arguments and wasn’t sure if we would be happy in the relationship in the future,” said the woman.

She claimed he had never expressed any of those feelings during their relationship, and that, while they spent three weeks trying to reconcile, she ultimately felt betrayed.

“Between the sudden flip-flopping, the family interference, the cancelled proposal (which was supposed to be a week later), and the new narrative of ‘I was never sure,’ something in me snapped,” she said.

Although he did not want to break up and continued going to therapy to “figure out his head,” the woman ultimately decided to end things.

The woman said the fallout is “painful,” but she still wonders if there is any chance he realizes what he wants and comes back.

“Did I do the right thing? Does it get better? Any advice is welcome,” she said.

In the comment section, many people applauded the woman for “standing up for yourself and putting yourself first.”

While many wondered the man’s true intentions, it was a common consensus that the two were incompatible from the very beginning, and they put on blinders because they “wanted marriage so badly.”
