With Whitney Cummings’ quip about being on “dildo duty” during a WNBA game, the internet exploded with activity. The poster showed Cummings’ picture with shades on at the Los Angeles Sparks vs Indiana Fever game and then gave a bold threat to anyone who dared to throw adult toys onto the court: “I’ll find you and I’ll make you swallow it whole thanks!” she was quoted from her deadpan style.

One could imagine with extremely large dark shades and a casually intense look that Cummings was ready to enforce a completely ridiculous arena policy on the matter. This was, after all, the reaction to several strange sex toy throws witnessed during this season’s WNBA games: a bizarre new trend that has left basketball spectators equally confounded and entertained.
Responses now poured in. One fan wrote, “Can’t make someone else do something that you couldn’t even do themselves”- implying that perhaps Cummings was, in fact, bluffing about enforcing the law. Another one chimed in with, “Careful, that might make someone want to do it even more,” adding that the threat might backfire.

Some people believe she secretly wants to buy more to contribute to her own stash. One commented, “Liar you’ll add it to your already packed collection,” and another one echoed, “You’re just trying to add to your collection, you can’t fool us.” The raunchy stand-up comedian has not spoken since.
This was only encouraging the ridiculous, for a fan then commented, “Dildo Duty would be a great band name,” while another audibly reflected on Cummings’ comedic history with, “Damn another Taken sequel, or would this be a reboot?”
One laughed at green dildos as the only thing worth seeing in WNBA, mocking the league for some of its viewership troubles.
There will always be those who don’t find humor in it. “Grown adults are throwing dildos on the floor at WNBA games. You people need to grow up,” ranted one, while another one completely lost it, saying, “Disgusting that a guy can’t go to a WNBA game and even bring gifts for the players yet he is vilified and arrested.”
Cummings’ career path also started being talked about again, with one user dropping the saying, “Well that’s a name I haven’t heard in years because her career kind of just crashed and burned.” Several other people jumped in with arguments in defense of her relevance through her podcast and stand-up tours.
Sex toys-the last thing one would ever expect to be associated with the sporting world-are no longer news. Sometimes it might even rain rubber ducks inside NHL arenas during warmups, and they even have adult toy giveaway days in minor league baseball. But if that is the case, WNBA’s random dildo downpours would be a slight-off-the-wall fan-created.
Having just returned to stand-up after an extended hiatus working as a writer-producer, Cummings seemed to have embraced the absurdity of modern fandom. Has she actually confiscated any adult toys yet? We still don’t know. On the bright side, the Internet clearly appreciated the attempt.

Career-wise, Cummings is built around taboo topics-the gamut from relationships to mental health-being usually self-deprecating. The recent viral moment is proof that she is still very much at the forefront of turning the nastiest of scenarios into comedy. And as the WNBA season unfolds, the downing of adult toys might just steal some thunder from the games themselves.
