Tracy Pollan and Michael J. Fox are passing down their best relationship advice.
While attending the A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s gala in New York City on Saturday, Nov. 15, the Family Ties actress, 65, revealed to PEOPLE the words of wisdom she and her husband gave their eldest child, Sam Fox, ahead of his wedding to Molly Milstein.
“I mean, the one thing actually that I would say that’s the most important thing is find something to laugh about together every day, if you can,” Pollan tells PEOPLE, noting that laughter has been the secret to her and Michael’s 37-year marriage. “You know what, we just take it one day at a time and it’s worked.”

Sam and Molly announced their marriage in a joint post on Instagram on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
“A month before🤫🦊👰🧡🥰❤️🔥🤝🤵🫡,” Milstein captioned 11 wedding photos.
Sam’s younger sisters were included among the shots of the couple’s special day. In addition to Sam, Pollan and Michael, 64, are parents to daughters Esmé, 24, and Aquinnah and Schuyler, 30.
Pollan’s joyful reaction can be seen among the snaps, while Michael wasn’t visible.

The actor founded his nonprofit, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, in 2000 and celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. While at the gala on Saturday, Pollan spoke highly of the foundation’s accomplishments.
“It’s so amazing, and there are two parts to how amazing it is,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s all of the work that they’ve done and all of the science that has been funded and the discoveries made that is just incredibly exciting and you know it gives us so much hope and optimism, and then there are these supporters who have rallied around us and been with us for 25 years.”
For his part, The Back to the Future star expressed how grateful he was to be surrounded by such dedicated and generous loved ones.
“All these people are friends of mine, family, essentially and it’s really great to see them. I’m walking on the red carpet and I’m surprised to see them, and then I think, ‘Well, why should I be surprised?’ ” he tells PEOPLE at the event, held at Cipriani South Street. “They’ve always been there for me, and they continue to be for me, year after year. It’s great.”
