‘The Abandons’ Reviews Are in – See What Critics Are Saying About Netflix’s Western TV Drama

The Abandons is one of the brand new shows on Netflix!

Here’s a synopsis of the Western drama TV series, which hit the streamer on Thursday (December 4): “Washington Territory – 1854 – The matriarchs of two very different families — one of wealth and privilege bound by blood, the other a found family of orphans and outcasts bound by love and necessity — find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love, and a piece of land with silver underneath. The collision echoes the American struggle of the haves and have-nots, in a place just beyond the reach of justice.”

Here’s what critics are saying so far…

The Abandons currently has a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

RogerEbert.com says: “The nuggets of melodrama, and some sumptuous Western production design, can’t make up for the feeling that, save the novelty of its female-led focus, we’ve seen so much of this kind of show before. Its scope is vast, but its depth is shallow.”

The Daily Beast says: “A pretender through and through, piling on clichés without any sense of authenticity, rhythm, or originality.”

CBR gives it a 6 out of 10, writing: “The Abandons [has] a slight edge that lets its story blossom over seven episodes, but there are still underlying problems poisoning the roots.”

Collider gives it a 4 out of 10, writing: “It’s hard not to wonder what The Abandons would have looked like if [Kurt] Sutter had remained to steer the ship from beginning to end, but in his absence, the Netflix western series can’t sustain any significant narrative momentum…”

TV Guide gives it a 5.5 out of 10, writing: “It’s easy to imagine a more entertaining version of The Abandons where Headey and Anderson really get to cook, but here they’re just battling against unmemorable material.”

On Wednesday (December 3), the cast and crew of The Abandons attended a Western-themed carpet and streaming event at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Los Angeles.
