Two recent shootings at South Carolina State University have left one person dead another injured. On October 4, 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler passed away from a gunshot wound. Authorities transported her to MUSC Health Orangeburg Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her deceased. Officials have reportedly scheduled an autopsy provide further details. According to Live5News, the shooting occurred during the university’s annual homecoming celebration, several hours after the football game. WLTX reports that SCU locked down the campus and issued an alert after students and staff reported shots fired near Hugine Suites student housing, which is the incident that claimed Butler’s life. Another shooting on campus reportedly left a man injured. State agents are investigating both incidents but as of right now they don’t believe the events are related.
Alleged Suspect Identified Following Deadly SCSU Shooting
A day after the fatal shooting, police arrested 18-year-old Matthew McCoy in connection with the incident. WISTV reports that McCoy allegedly had a loaded handgun in his vehicle parked on the SCSU campus. Witnesses say he purportedly grabbed the firearm after seeing a fight and fired toward the altercation. At this time, officials have not yet determined whether he is responsible for Jaliyah Butler’s death or caused the injuries that resulted from the shooting. However, he has reportedly been charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person.
South Carolina State University’s President Reacts To Fatal Incident
Much about Jaliyah Butler’s family remains unknown. However, SC State President Alexander issued an official statement, sending his condolences to her family. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who lost her life and to all who have been affected.” He also said he is working with police to investigate the violence and plans to take strong measures to keep students and staff safe. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate these senseless acts of violence. The safety and well-being of our students, employees, and guests remain our top priority.”
