Peloton has announced a recall of an essential part of some Original Series Bike+ models, saying it could break and injure users.

In a Nov. 6 statement on its website, the exercise giant said the seat post “can break during use, posing a potential fall and injury risk to consumers.” Peloton said they’ve received three reports of the post breaking in the U.S.; the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) said there have been two reports of injuries from the seat post breaking.

A representative for Peloton tells PEOPLE in a statement: “The integrity of our products and our Members’ well-being are our top priorities. We are taking this opportunity to make replacement seat posts available to all affected Bike+ users and we encourage them to contact us to receive the redesigned seat post as soon as possible.”

“Our replacement seat post, which is the CPSC-approved remedy, includes design and quality enhancements, including a fail-safe mechanism intended to ensure that in the event of a break, the seat will not detach from the post, reducing the risk of injury,” the statement said. “All Peloton bikes currently offered for sale are equipped with Peloton’s redesigned seat post, including the Cross Training Series Bike, Bike+, and Original Bike+ models.”

The seat posts in question belong to the Original Series Bike+ model PL02, manufactured from December 2019 through July 2022, that were sold in the U.S. and Canada. For customers unsure of their model number, Peloton advised them to look on the label inside or behind the front fork, or behind the flywheel.

The affected bikes have a serial number that begins with the letter T, Peloton says.

Peloton is advising customers to check its website to determine if their particular model is affected by the recall. If so, the company is offering a free replacement post.

The recall potentially impacts an estimated 833,000 bikes sold in the U.S., and 44,800 bikes in Canada. The company advises that the new post can be installed by the Peloton user at home.

In 2023, the company issued a similar recall after receiving 35 reports of seat posts breaking on the original model Peloton bike. At the time, the company said “there have been 13 reports of injuries, including a wrist fracture, lacerations and bruises.”

And in 2021, the company recalled its Tread+ and Tread treadmills after a child was killed in what the company’s then-CEO John Foley called a “tragic accident.”
