Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King, who are best friends, could not help but laugh when the feature ‘Oprah’s Favorite Things’ included $175 decorative rocks from Anthropologie. The funny video posted by Oprah Daily shows Adam’s unbelievable and blank expression throughout the process of trying to make the rocks look like the coziest trend in home decor to the media moguls.

In the clip, Adam presents the items almost too seriously. He labels them ‘the hottest thing right now’ and says that they are being sold out and people are using them both as decor pieces and bookends. ‘They are just rocks,’ he asserts very convincingly. ‘They are stones that people are putting up as art.’ He claims that the stones are ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ and that each is ‘unique,’ but he does not forget to let the customers know that they will only receive the ‘general dimensions’ of the stone they will get. The regular price is $900, but he makes a limited-time offer of $175 for the first customer.

Gayle King’s reaction is anything but funny. To start with, she admits that her vote was ‘a big no,’ and then goes on to say that when the producers brought her the ‘crazy idea’ she thought they were joking. ‘Where is the camera?’ she remembers having asked. Then she fell back on Oprah, saying that she is ‘off the earth,’ which was a sarcastic remark on her friend’s famous status. Oprah herself was skeptical at first but finally said that she would never recommend the rocks to a ‘maverick heart,’ while at the same time admitting that Adam’s exuberance about the price of $175 was convincing.

The audience made it known that they loved the segment by going to the comments section to share their laughter and praises for Adam’s skill. A viewer stated that ‘Adam wins the academy award on this one,’ which another viewer followed by saying, ‘Give this man an Oscar.’ The charm with which he managed to sell the whole thing turned out to be the main topic of conversation, and one person even said, ‘My. gawd. Adam can sell rocks. That’s my takeaway!’ Another one confessed, ‘ok, but he had me thinking about needing a $175 RARE, 1 OF 1, ROCK OF THE EARTH.’

The absurdity of the product sparked extremely witty and funny comments. For example, one user mentioned past customer knowledge scenarios and wrote, ‘To be fair my mom has always said if someone tried to sell her a bottled water as a kid, she would have thought they were nuts.’ Another user quoted JLo’s lyric, ‘Oprah said, “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got!”‘ and wrote it.

Not everyone was impressed by what they called an interesting product, some users quickly mentioned the practical aspect as the main reason for their disbelief. One user with a very realistic and down-to-earth approach said, ‘If I have 175 it ain’t gonna be on the rock it’s gonna be on some food, gas and bills.’ Another user narrated his/her confusion with rocks and said, ‘Pass….. I got a rock from Wyoming but now I can’t tell the difference between the Wyoming rock and my North Carolina rocks.’

Many users referred to the moment Adam said, ‘You’re getting general dimensions, to be quite frank,’ and one even used a skull and rock emoji in response to say that they were ‘dead’ from laughter. The entire exchange can certainly be called a smart and comical way that reveals the sometimes absurd side of luxury trends and the impact of great marketing skills. It was indeed a live display of parody and a proof that even the most uninteresting things can turn into source of amusement and debate if they are well-presented. Oprah Winfrey has often discussed career topics, and this segment also touched on Maya Angelou, whose work has deeply influenced her. Additionally, Oprah has predicted that people will marry AI and fall in love with technology.
