A 35-year-old woman and a 2-year-old girl died in Idaho over the weekend after another vehicle crashed into theirs, causing them to plunge into a canal, officials said.

The Bonneville County Coroner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE that the 35-year-old victim has been identified as Jaime Stebelton from Rexburg, adding that they are not publicly releasing the toddler’s name since she is under 18. Coroner Shante Sanchez also confirmed that the victims were mother and daughter.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office said in an online statement that they received multiple 911 calls about the fatal incident involving two vehicles in Shelley around 1:41 p.m. local time on Sunday, Oct. 5.

“The callers reported one vehicle in a canal, overturned, and fully submerged in water. Further reports described multiple occupants trapped in the overturned vehicle and under water,” the sheriff’s office said.

Multiple agencies responded and a Shelley police officer was first to arrive at the scene. Once there, they found multiple people trying to enter the overturned vehicle, described as a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, to try to free the occupants, while also checking on the people inside the second vehicle, a 2022 Hyundai Palisade, the sheriff’s office said.

“Our brave citizenry and first responders entered the canal and were able to turn the Sonata over to its side to assist in extracting the occupants,” the sheriff’s office said. Four people were pulled from the Sonata, including the 35-year-old woman and 2-year-old girl, who were both unconscious and not breathing.

CPR was initiated for both victims and they were transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, along with the other two occupants, a 43-year-old man and a 11-year-old boy, who both experienced non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The Palisade had three people inside: a 27-year-old male driver, a 6-year-old boy and a four-year-old boy. The driver experienced non-life-threatening injuries and the children appeared uninjured, the sheriff’s office continued.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the sheriff’s office found that the Sonata was heading south and approaching a two-way stop sign. The Palisade was driving east. The Sonata pulled out in front of the Palisade, then the Palisade hit the Sonata in the intersection, the investigation found.

“The Sonata continued after impact and overturned into the canal. The Palisade struck a power pole after impact and came to a stop,” the sheriff’s office said, adding they found the 2-year-old in the Sonata had been buckled into a car seat, but “the other three occupants did not appear to be wearing seat belts.”

“The children from the Palisade were wearing seat belts, however the male driver did not appear to be wearing a seat belt,” the sheriff’s office added.

The 35-year-old woman and the 2-year-old girl later died from their injuries at the hospital. Reached over the phone, a representative from the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE that the incident is still under investigation.
