NEED TO KNOW
- The first four episodes of Stranger Things season 5 dropped on Netflix on Nov. 26
- In Volume 1, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Hopper (David Harbour) venture together through the Upside Down
- Their many emotional scenes come amid news of a report alleging she filed a harassment complaint against him before filming season 5
In Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 5, David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown share some of their most heartwarming scenes together.
As the final season begins, Jim Hopper (Harbour) enters the Upside Down for yet another “crawl” — their term for a mission to try to find Vecna — and his adopted daughter Eleven (Brown) ends up joining him there after Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) is taken by a demogorgon. During their hunt for Holly, Hopper is panicked over Eleven’s safety (the military is hunting her), while she’s bothered by his overprotectiveness.
They share nearly every scene together throughout Volume 1, season 5, which follows news of a report alleging she filed a harassment complaint against him. On Nov. 1, The Daily Mail reported a source alleged that Brown, 21, had filed a bullying and harassment complaint against Harbour, 50, before production began on season 5.

Brown’s alleged complaint against Harbour included “pages and pages of accusations,” a source told the outlet. An investigation allegedly “went on for months,” and she had a representative with her on set while filming season 5, according to the outlet.
Representatives for Netflix, Brown and Harbour did not respond to requests from PEOPLE for comment at the time.
During the first episode drop of season 6, Hopper opens up to Eleven about how losing his late daughter, Sara, has made him even more worried about her, and the touching moment with Eleven is a standout from the first installment of season 5.
“My daughter, Sara, she was brave — bravest person I ever knew,” Hopper told Eleven as she tended to a wound on his side as they ventured through the Upside Down. “She stared death in the face. She never got scared, she never wavered. Fought her heart out. The doctors said they never saw anything like it. They thought she was gonna make it, too.”

Hopper then broke down in tears as he remembered his young daughter, and the story helped Eleven understand. “So that’s why you don’t want me in here? Because you think Vecna will win and I will die?”
Hopper didn’t exactly say that, but he told her, “[I’ve] just been around long enough to know that you can’t count on anything in this life. I don’t want to lose you. I won’t.”
In episode 4, the two break into the government building and before they split up, Hopper sends her to safety telling her, “I’m not gonna risk losing you.”
“From here on out, I want you to know how proud I am of you. I am so proud of you,” he said. “I am so proud of what you’ve overcome. I’m proud of who you are.”

Neither Brown nor Harbour have commented on the alleged harassment complaint, but at the season 5 premiere in Los Angeles on Nov. 6, they put on a united front and were seen laughing and smiling as they posed for photos together.
At the premiere, the actress opened up to Entertainment Tonight about the “really special bond” she has with Harbour. She teased that fans will “really get to see” Eleven and Hopper’s father-daughter dynamic in season 5. “It’s been so special to have him along the journey for me,” she said.
Harbour told the outlet of his costar, “I adore her,” as he praised the whole cast: “I’ve been proud to watch all of them grow up and become great artists. I doubt it will be the last time we’ll see each other in this world or work together.”

Harbour has been candid about being “protective” of Brown, whom he met on the set when she was just 11 years old. In his 2021 appearance on That Scene with Dan Patrick podcast, Harbour said, “Millie and I have always had sort of a special relationship because I knew her when she was so young.”
“I knew her before any of this big fame hit. I have a real protective feeling for her. I have a real like worry. I worry about her and the fame and all that she has to struggle with,” he continued.
Brown, for her part, has similarly described her real-life relationship with Harbour as parental. “Winona Ryder and David Harbour are like my parents,” she said during a panel in 2018, per Variety. “On set, they’re like, ‘Stop running, what are you eating, why are you eating that?’”

She mentioned that Harbour was specifically protective over her romantic life. “David is like, ‘Another boy?’” she told the outlet.
Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 5 is now streaming on Netflix. Volume 2 drops Dec. 25, followed by the finale on Dec. 31.
