NEED TO KNOW

  • Bradley Cho is on day 22 of DoorDashing to save up $6,500 for an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Julia Jang
  • He’s earned $902 so far (about 14% of the goal)
  • Cho’s “DoorDash for a Diamond Ring” video series has grown his social media following to 410,000 on TikTok and Instagram combined

Bradley Cho is 22 days into his “DoorDash for a Diamond Ring” goal, but has many more days to go.

The 27-year-old is working in procurement by day and DoorDash delivery by night to earn $6,500 for an engagement ring. A few months ago, Cho realized that his full-time job salary doesn’t generate enough discretionary income for him to afford to propose to his girlfriend of a year and a half, Julia Jang, 25, so he decided to DoorDash at night and on weekends to save up money to pay for her dream ring, which they custom-designed together and were quoted for in November.

“I was tracking our finances and realized that over the past five months, I had saved $0 for our engagement and wedding,” Cho tells PEOPLE. “So I decided to DoorDash to try and raise enough money to pay for the ring.”

Cho has DoorDashed in the past to pay for college expenses and an emergency vet bill, but this time is different. Because he had been increasingly posting content on social media at the time, he decided that he would document his DoorDash journey daily too. What he never expected after sharing his first DoorDash video in December was for the series to go viral.

“This has been something I’ve always done in the past; journaling, then picture-taking and now mostly videos to look back on when I’m married to my future wife and hopefully [have] kids,” Cho says. He said he decided to chronicle his journey when he decided to “find ways to make extra money to pay for the ring.”

He continues, “We have been overwhelmed with the support online and are happy that other people are taking inspiration from our story and sharing positive messages.”

Cho DoorDashes for approximately two to four hours after his regular job, and for around the same amount of time on the weekends. He makes “anywhere from $20-$50 per shift,” and has earned $902 so far, which is about 14% of his $6,500 goal.

Millions of people have watched Cho’s DoorDash videos, in which he shares clips from work and tidbits about his relationship. Since December, the series has grown Cho’s following to 208,000 on TikTok, and 202,000 on Instagram, which is 410,000 combined people following along on his journey.

Many companies, such as The Knot and Brilliant Earth, and even a few influencers, including Catherine Ebs, have offered to cover the engagement ring expense for Cho. Despite Cho appreciating these generous offers, he continues to turn them down.

“I want the ring to be something I earned for my girlfriend,” he says. “It is a symbol that I showed up for her day after day to give her the world before our marriage, and will continue to do so during marriage.”

He continues, “I also lost our promise ring from our six-month anniversary in November, and wanted to work and make up for it with my own effort. The word ‘promise’ has a lot of meaning in our relationship because that was one of the fundamental things we emphasized throughout our relationship so far — not making empty promises, showing effort to keep every promise we make and working on it together, no matter how long it takes.”

Cho was also influenced to achieve his goal by himself by his father, who worked a similar gig for hours before and after his main job to help pay for his childhood braces. “This has also heavily inspired me to work hard to provide for the people I care about,” he says.

“This whole process was something I had always wanted to document to keep forever and [I] plan to continue to do so,” he says.
