The robbers reportedly broke into the Galerie d’Apollon through a window with a disc cutter. The gallery included vessels collected by the kings of France made out of minerals like jade and rock crystal, as well as the French crown jewels.

Per the Louvre’s official website, the most precious items included three diamonds known as the Regent, the Sancy and the Hortensia.

“The Musée du Louvre will remain closed today for exceptional reasons. All reservations for today’s date will be reimbursed. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the official site reads.

The thieves reportedly used a ladder on the back of a truck to get into the museum and left the scene on motor scooters in the time frame of approximately seven minutes, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told France Inter, per NBC News.

“The investigation has begun, and a detailed list of the stolen items is being compiled. Beyond their market value, these items have inestimable heritage and historical value,” he said, via Fox News.

There are thought to be 3 or 4 “experienced” thieves involved in the heist.

“I expect we will very soon find the thieves and jewels,” he added, per NBC News.

Years ago, the museum faced another incident involving the Mona Lisa.
