Julia Garner says the Madonna biopic she was cast in is “supposed to still happen.”
The 31-year-old was cast in the production in 2022, two years after it went into production. In 2023, production was paused as Madonna went on her Celebration Tour. According to Julia, the movie hasn’t been canceled – but it has been a lot of work to prepare for.
Julia was a guest on the SmartLess podcast on Monday (July 28) where she talked about how she’s prepared to play the “Material Girl” singer.

“That’s supposed to still happen,” Julia shared on the podcast when asked if the biopic had been canceled. She went on to share that she’s been a lifelong fan of Madonna, which lead her to audition for the role even though she wasn’t previously trained as a dancer.
“I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!” Julia explained on the podcast episode.
According to Julia, preparing for the biopic has involved embodying Madonna‘s attitude. She said, “OK, what would Madonna do? Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.’”
If you missed it, there’s also a separate series based on Madonna‘s career in the works.
