The nearly esoteric video of a color-adapting octopus from Jake Paul‘s hydration company “W” in a swimming pool has gone for a few seconds-and told viewers to watch the octopus closely-soon, Napoleonian irresistibly led his followers into a great debate as to whether this aquatic display was real.

The social media star then visualized the octopus on his Instagram stories and saw it swimming underwater in what looked to be a clean pool. The short caption was an instruction to watch the octopus, accompanied by the mind-blown emoji, followed by a tag of his company “@getw.” The promotion was however swiftly overshadowed, as the entire internet went crazing debating about the animal: Is it some biological evidence hug or a big digital fabrication?

This started a cascade in cyberspace, with opinions swiftly bifurcating into two camps. Most commentators considered the show a fake one. “Octopus wouldn’t live in chlorine,” one user pointed out, thereby outright labeling the videos as a fake. Another comment was more relatable to many who simply said, “Octopus in a pool … fake.” There were repeated claims of artificial intelligence suspicion. “Jake really likes Ai 😭,” said one, with another predicting, “Haters will say it’s AI…” This AI-manipulation theory was even jokingly extended to Paul’s boxing career, with one person saying, “I figured it out, his fights are all AI generated 😂😂😂.”

Comedy began sprouting as many started doubting the video. Several joined in on commenting about the absurdity rather than the truth. “Homie holding his farts in his swimming trunks,” cracked one witty observer, putting his much more serious commentary on the octopus’s presence in the pool on rather different terms. Further sarcastic commentaries voiced their opinion on the product: “Cool can’t wait to buy W because an OCTOPUS CHANGED COLORES……. Insert huge fart sound ()!!!” That sums up how a lot of people perceived that video: as an outlandish and dubious form of marketing.

The drift of some conversations ranged away from octopus engagement. The post had also attracted the usual target of the super famous, spraying requests for money: “Jake i need to 20 Thousand dolar pleasee sent me handsome Man ❤️🙌🙌” These were interspersed among the more pertinent discussions. Disparaging comparisons weren’t missing either: “I liked it more when Logan did it,” referring to Logan Paul, Jake’s brother.

Jake Paul being hardly a stranger in the social-propelled business ventures, and his company W has been one of the mainstays in his marketing ploys; this post did way beyond product placement: it sparked an enormous engagement through presenting a mystifying image that called for some reaction. Is the octopus real, CGI, or what else? It kept them chatting and dissecting. Ticking just about that one minute mark, the video played out three acts: promotion, skepticism, and joke telling, really setting the bar on how digital Paul knows to grab and sustain attention-whether digital or otherwise, the spectacle made everybody watch closely. This kind of questionable ad campaign is becoming a signature move for the influencer.
