How Brandon Blackstock Inspired Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Piece by Piece’ & Why She Later Rewrote the Lyrics Multiple Times

Kelly Clarkson‘s heartbreaking song “Piece by Piece” was inspired by her marriage to Brandon Blackstock, but she rewrote the song multiple times after their breakup.

Amid the shocking news of Brandon‘s death at the age of 48, we’re taking a look back at how he served as the inspiration for the song, as well as several changes to the lyrics over the years.

The song was recorded in 2014 and released in 2015 as the title track for her album Piece by Piece. A slowed-down version of the song was released a year later after Kelly‘s emotional live performance on American Idol.

“Piece by Piece” is about how her faith in love and family was restored by her relationship with Brandon following a rocky relationship with her father.

“A lot of the reasons why I wrote ‘Piece by Piece’ was I guess I didn’t realize the gravity of the situation until I had a child of my own, and until I experienced love like I do with Brandon on the daily basis. I guess you don’t realize something is missing until you feel it. I can’t imagine walking away from my little girl. I can’t imagine not having that love anymore. I didn’t know it was missing because I never had it. It was a revelation and that’s why I wrote that song. I think a lot of people go through that,” Kelly told the Huffington Post years ago.

After Kelly‘s divorce from Brandon, she updated the lyrics for her 2023 Las Vegas residency to make the song about her self-worth as a single mother.

Kelly then debuted new lyrics yet again just a couple of weeks ago.

“I wrote it [when] I was feeling a type of way, and hoping more than [anything],” she told fans at the opening night of her new residency in July 2025. “And then, I changed it a couple summers ago. I had to sing it. I was like, ‘I gotta sing it ‘cause people kept asking for it.’ But, it just didn’t feel right. Then I was like, ‘I kinda like the way I’m going with it,’ so I changed it just a little bit more. It kind of became aware to me that, man, this is a lot to put on one person anyway. Like, therapy, hey! I ended up changing it. It’s more of an empowering thing of like, ‘Cool, it didn’t happen for me, but that doesn’t mean you’re not worthy, that you’re not valuable.’”

The original lyrics in the chorus read, “But piece by piece, he collected me / Up off the ground, where you abandoned things, yeah / Piece by piece, he filled the holes / That you burned in me at six years old / And you know / He never walks away, he never asks for money / He takes care of me, he loves me / Piece by piece, he restored my faith / That a man can be kind and a father could stay.”

Kelly changed the lyrics in 2023 to, “But piece by piece, I collected me / Up off the ground, where you abandoned things, yeah / Piece by piece, I filled the holes / That you burned in me at six years old / And you know / I just walk away when they ask for money / I take care of me, cause I love me / Piece by piece, I restored my faith / That a heart can still beat, even when it breaks.”

Kelly has updated the lyrics yet again for 2025.

In the second half of the chorus, Kelly now sings, “And you know / I’m learning every day how to love me / I let go of the shame that you taught me / Piece by piece, I restored my faith / That a heart can still beat, even when it breaks.”

Look back at everything that Kelly has said about her relationship with Brandon over the years.
