The professional betrayal, said Heidi Montag, occurred immediately after the family’s house burned down. This emotional revelation has the audience passionately discussing the subjects of loyalty and genuineness in the entertainment world.

This is undoubtedly something for which Heidi Montag shows no mercy, and this new revelation is exactly that. The Hills alum shared a very sad story about a music collaboration that turned sour in what she claims was the most stressful time in her life. Just as her family was in crisis with their house burning down the other famous artist approached her about a joint project and instead of following through, pulled out at the worst possible time.

The tear-jerking video from her series, The Fame Game, shows Montag narrating how the person initially seemed fairly certain to actually help give her career a kickstart. She recalled, “The reach out seemed so kind; I kept on thinking, ‘Here is finally some person in this industry that wanted to help.’” They went on to record the song and were about to shoot the video when all of a sudden it disappeared into thin air.

There could not have been worse timing. “When our house just burned down, this was such important time with my kids,” she said. “Every minute counted.” They had poured their heart and soul into this project, but then after all of that, she got an email stating that things have changed and the record would no longer be released. It shook her to the core, making her question their initial motivations. “Why would you just play this whole charade?” she said in the video.

Montag felt like there were people in this industry who feed off the energy of tragedy. “People come attached to like a tragedy, get that energy, and then second the like cloud part of it’s gone they’re out,” she explained. The moment work actually needs to start, these collaborators fade away, leaving unfortunate artists like Montag to do the real hard work of picking up the pieces from this disaster.

The comments section was going bonkers with support and speculation about who the insider might be. Avril Lavigne was almost immediately suspected by some fans because shortly after the fire, Montag and Lavigne appeared together on numerous occasions. “Definitely Avril! I saw that coming for sure,” said one, while another said, “They were with her not long after the fires having red wine together.”

Some fans were heartbroken at the prospect, one commenting, “Hoping it wasn’t Avril because that duet would have been a dream come true.” Other comments were less subtle in condemning the unnamed artist. “Drop. That. Name. they had no problem dropping you,” demanded one.

Not everybody was so quick to lay the blame on the other artist. A considerate community member remarked, “But she may have had no choice or say in it.. her bosses/record label could have pulled the plug on it,” which only stands to affirm just how convoluted power dynamics are within the music industry.

Amidst all the speculation, the focus remained on supporting Montag through this painful memory: “‘So sorry to hear Someone Did This to You Guys.. Especially when you were going through All That,’” one sympathizer wrote. Another gave an uplifting perspective by twisting the previous statement: “‘Let it go guys. God has got you. Bigger and better will come. Humans will always disappoint us.’”

From there, it turned to Montag’s resilience and recent musical successes coming out of this storm. A hopeful reference to Montag’s recent Vancouver show went, “Good thing ‘I’ll Do It’ became a number one hit without them.” Another gave a sweet story: “My daughter plays ‘I’ll Do It’ as her drop off song for school every morning!!”

What makes the revelation all the more poignant are the days they and her husband Spencer Pratt have been going through rebuilding literally and figuratively after that house fire. The betrayal becomes personal given that they have been outspoken about their journey.

Montag’s story speaks of the darker side to the entertainment industry that many would have experienced but only a few would ever talk about. The very narrative she is setting forth-about people attracted to the energy of a tragedy only to disappear when the work starts-is something anyone with fair-weather friendships or professional associations can relate to.

Despite such an agonizing memory being lodged in the past, Montag proceeds in the present with making life for herself and her family. She, at least, feels comfortable allowing these terrible things to be part of her story, showing a maturity and perspective born from nearly two decades traversing the high and lows of fame. The silver lining would be, without that false start in the music industry, perhaps she wouldn’t have gone on to make the music her people are finally vibing with today.

Her case must have hit a nerve among her followers, who appreciate her candidness regarding the less glamorous side of fame and the music industry. In a recent candid video, she discussed her divine purpose and family life. She also made headlines when she slammed Palisades Park over an insensitive fire truck theme following her family’s traumatic experience. More recently, Heidi Montag embraced her country roots in a sun-drenched field photoshoot.
