- Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated, PEOPLE confirmed on Monday, Sept. 29
- The couple first met in 2005 and tied the knot the next year
- They share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban didn’t shy away from commenting candidly on their relationship over the past two decades.
On Monday, Sept. 29 PEOPLE confirmed that the couple split after 19-years of marriage. A source exclusively told PEOPLE, “She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” while adding that “Nicole’s sister has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another.”
The pair first met at a gala in 2005 and eventually wed the following year. During the relationship, they welcomed daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
Kidman, 58, previously told PEOPLE that the country music artist released her favorite song, “Once in a Lifetime,” five months after the pair wed in 2006. “Keith wrote that for me when we were first getting married,” she recalled.
At the start of their marriage, Urban relapsed into drug and alcohol addiction while his wife was filming out of the country. After learning what happened, Kidman staged an intervention.
“If you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl,” he said in a speech honoring Kidman at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala last year. “Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own. And she chose love.”
Urban got help at a treatment center at the behest of Kidman and his friends. “Four months into a marriage I’m in rehab for three months,” he continued in the AFI speech as Kidman looked on with tears in her eyes. “I had no idea what was going to happen to us.”
In 2007 the newlyweds put roots down in Nashville to live a quieter life. “We don’t want to live in a compound,” Urban told People at the time. “It’s the great thing about Tennessee and especially Nashville. The people are just real people, so they just accept you being neighbors.”

In 2018, Kidman shared the secret to the couple’s long-lasting love with PEOPLE, saying, “I think it’s knowing that you have to keep contributing to what we call the ‘us.’ You go, ‘Does this work for us?’ When you make an us, it’s yours together — that’s what you create.”
She also reflected on their first date, which was to Woodstock, telling W Magazine in 2018, “[He] picked me up on a motorbike, took me to Woodstock. My kind of guy.”
That same year, she said one of the secrets to their marriage is “not having secrets.” “We just approach it with humility and hope and just really love hanging out,” she told Parade magazine. “I mean it’s that simple. We love spending time together. We have a lot of fun together and we just choose each other. If there is one person I can hang out with, it’s him and the girls and that’s it.”

In 2019, she told PEOPLE when she knew she wanted to marry Urban. “It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York,” Kidman said. “That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”
“It was pretty intense,” Kidman said for the 2019 cover story. “I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”
Two years later, she candidly told Harper’s Bazaar: “We’re always working through stuff, but it’s very much love-based, so there’s an enormous amount of give and take. I want him to have the best life he can have, and he responds the same way,” adding, “We really love parenting together.”

The Oscar winner told PEOPLE in April 2024 that Urban, 57, is “my love, my deep, deep love.”
Later that year, she told PEOPLE that Urban still asked her out on dates at the time. “I like not knowing where he’s going to take me. Surprise me, baby!”
In January 2025, Kidman revealed another “key to a successful marriage,” telling W Magazine, “The double-headed shower: key to a successful marriage. Separate commodes and a double-headed shower!”
Meanwhile, Urban has also opened up their relationship. In 2016, he told CBS News that meeting Kidman and “getting married wasn’t life-changing, it was life-beginning.”
Nearly five years ago, Urban appeared on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert, and said, “She’s just the one, that was it,” per TODAY, adding, “She’s the one that I was searching for my whole life.”

In April 2024, when Kidman earned the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award, Urban gave a speech in her honor. “She also has a bit of a mantra, and that is: Choose love.”
“Now I’ve watched her do this many times, navigating emotionally complex things that she’s gone through with so many people. She always chooses that phrase; she lives by it. Choose love,” he revealed, per TODAY. “She has the capacity to love like no one I’ve ever met.”
Reps for Kidman and Urban did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
