Emma Thompson confesses she once snogged ‘beautiful’ Rik Mayall in the back of a taxi and reveals Keanu Reeves used to fancy her mother

Emma Thompson has confessed that she once snogged ‘beautiful’ Young Ones star Rik Mayall in the back of a taxi.

The actress and screenwriter, 66, confessed to the cheeky kiss with the late actor, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 56, during a conversation with Ben Elton at Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire to promote his new memoir What Have I Done?

Admitting the kiss, Emma said: ‘I don’t know if I should say this but there is no hiding the fact that I I did have a snog in a taxi with Rik once. I have just remembered it actually. I probably should not be sharing with a cathedral full of strangers.’

‘He would love that. He told me. He said “I snogged Emma”,’ Ben said, to which Emma, looking surprised, replied: ‘Did he?’

‘He was very handsome,’ said Ben, with Emma agreeing as she added: ‘He was really beautiful.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Emma revealed how actor Keanu Reeves had the hots for her mum Phyllida Law, now 93, when they starred together in the 1993 movie Much Ado About Nothing. Her mum would have been 61 at the time.

Keanu, now 61, is currently dating Alexandra Grant, 52 who is 10 years his junior. He is currently starring in Waiting for Godot in New York.

Emma’s Scottish actress mum had a small part of Ursula alongside Keanu in the movie, which also starred Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Kenneth Branagh, Kate Beckinsale.

Recalling Keanu’s feelings towards her mum, Emma said: ‘Keanu is such a lovely person. A really lovely person.

‘I don’t know if you know but he really fancied my mum. She was in the movie? Did you know that?’

But Emma went on to say she wasn’t even aware her mother was in the film, before praising Keanu for his reputation for being a good guy.

She said: ‘I did not know she was in the movie.

‘I know he is known and is famously seen as an actor who never puts his hand (around a woman). He is always quite self-consciously showing that he is not taking advantage. A good bloke and protecting women.’

It comes after Emma was joined by her daughter, 25, for the screening of her newest film Dead Of Winter at London’s Picturehouse Central, as well as her husband Greg Wise, 59, and her mother Phyllida Law.

Posing for snaps together at the premiere, Emma opted for an eye-catching white three-piece suit covered with green embroidery, while Gaia slipped into an elegant black strapless dress.

Meanwhile Greg, who has been married to Emma for 20 years, showed off his own snazzy sense of style in an eye-catching printed zipped jacket.

Phyllida, 93, herself an actress who has starred in a string of film and TV roles including Much Ado About Nothing with her daughter, arrived on the premiere’s blue carpet in a wheelchair.

In Dead Of Winter, Emma plays a widow, travelling alone through snowbound northern Minnesota, who interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl.

Hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, she realizes that she is the young girl’s only hope.

Gaia plays the younger version of Emma’s role, portraying the character’s journey from a person who experienced a rich and happy life, through trauma, to becoming someone capable and willing to sacrifice.

The film explores the darker side of human nature and revenge narratives, but also highlights the heroine’s resilience and strength.

Gaia’s father Greg is Dame Emma’s second husband, former Strictly star and Walking On Sunshine actor.

Emma has been happily married to her second husband Greg for 20 years.

Gaia made her acting debut in the BBC series Silent Witness – where she played university student Jo Reynolds whose mother, the controversial health secretary, is assassinated – sparking the interest of forensic pathologists.
