“Growing up playing soccer and being so inspired by @miahamm. This is a dream come true,” Emily shared on Instagram story with the casting news.
The upcoming movie is based on the book “The Girls of Summer: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and How It Changed the World” by Jeré Longman.
Per Deadline, the story “catches up with 1990s U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in 1999, as they defy the odds to emerge victorious in a dramatic penalty kick shootout against China in the World Cup final, under the scorching summer sun and in a stadium filled with 93,000 fans. This monumental win captivated millions worldwide and forever altered the course of women’s sports.”
The 99′ers is set to be helmed by Nicole Kassell, best known for Netlfix’s Sirens and HBO’s Watchmen, with a script from Katie Lovejoy, Dana Stevens and Peter Hedges.
This will mark Emily‘s first project since her new movie People We Meet on Vacation debuted and has already debuted at the top of Netflix’s weekly Top 10 Movies list, with 17.2 million views.
Mia joined the US Women’s National Soccer Team at just 15 years old in 1987, and played with the team through 2004. She retired as the world’s top international goal scorer at 158 goals, which she held for years. In 2007, she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
