Leap Of Faith? Eldery Woman Hospitalized After Reportedly Swallowing 8 Live Frogs For Back Pain

An 82-year-old woman in China really took “desperate times call for desperate measures” to a whole new level. She swallowed eight live frogs, hoping to cure her lower back pain. Yeah, you read that right. Instead of hitting up a doctor, she went full folklore with this remedy, and let’s just say, it did not end well.

Zhang’s Leap Of Faith Gone Wrong

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman, surnamed Zhang, had been suffering from a herniated disc for quite some time. When she heard that gobbling live frogs might help with her pain, she asked her family to catch some for her. “My mother ate eight live frogs. Now the sharp pain has made her unable to walk,” her son explained to the doctors. Unfortunately, the bizarre ritual backfired hard, landing her in a hospital in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Then, she’s stuck in the hospital battling parasites and pain, proving some old school advice is better left in the past.

China Folk Remedy Or Full-On Regret?

Doctors revealed that swallowing those frogs wrecked her digestive system, allowing parasites to invade her body. Medical tests showed a surge in oxyphil cells, which can signal serious issues like parasitic infections and blood disorders. After two weeks of treatment, she was finally discharged, but the whole ordeal is a painful reminder: some folk remedies belong in the past, not your stomach.

“Swallowing frogs has damaged the patient’s digestive system and resulted in some parasites being present in her body, including sparganum,” a doctor from the hospital reportedly revealed.
