Magnus’ mother, Casey Morris, confirmed the tragedy on a GoFundMe page. “My son tragically passed at the Urangan shopping centre. It is a devastating loss not only to my daughters and me but everyone who loved him,” she wrote.

Morris said her son was “very unwell” at the time of his death, and he “overcame a lot of hurdles and challenges” before the incident.

“Magnus was a very unwell child, but he was the most hilarious little boy,” Morris wrote of her son. “The day he passed, he caught a toad and named him Jeff and everyone who was around him was so impressed as he was really starting to come out of his shell.”

The grieving mother then went on to thank “everyone who helped to try to save my little boy,” adding, “I will forever be grateful.”

“I would also like to thank the people who held me and tried to comfort and shield me from the eyes of people,” Morris continued.

She concluded her GoFundMe post: “Magnus will be missed immensely and my heart is breaking every day. I just want my baby back.”

Speaking with the Daily Mail, one eyewitness recalled, “The mother was so distraught. [It was] so, so sad, and especially at this time of year or any time. My deepest condolences go out to the mom and her family.”

“It was horrible. I walked up to see if they needed help. I wasn’t prepared to see a little boy,” a second person at the mall told the outlet.

The Urangan Shopping Center and the Queensland Ambulance Service did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, Dec. 6.
