Ashley Tisdale Reacts to DWTS ‘Bop to the Top’ Performance

Dancing With The Stars competitors Scott Hoying and Rylee Arnold busted a move to High School Musical’s  “Bop to the Top” this week – and now Ashley Tisdale is weighing in.

Tisdale, who famously performed the song as her character Sharpay in the Disney movie, took to TikTok on Friday, October 10, to share her take on the reality TV show recreation.

The social media clip showed the singer sitting on a bed as she watched the performance by Hoying, 34, and Arnold, 20, on her phone while being filmed by an unknown person.

“Oh my God, they actually did the dance moves,” Tisdale, 40, said as she shared her reaction. “There’s some moves that they’re doing and some moves that are obviously ballroom stuff…”

While Tisdale was impressed that the pair followed many of the same choreographed moves from the actual movie, she did admit it was strange hearing a version of  “Bop to the Top”  that wasn’t performed by her.

“It’s weird hearing someone else sing it though,” Tisdale confessed.

Pentatonix singer, Hoying, and his dance partner, Arnold, took on the challenge of dancing salsa to the famous song as part of Dancing With The Stars’ Disney Night.

For their efforts, they scored 21 out of 30 points from the judges. It was enough to keep them in the competition. Hilaria Baldwin and Gleb Savchenko were ultimately eliminated from the show.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted Hoying seemingly subtly embodying the High School Musical character Ryan Evans (the brother of Tisdale’s Sharpay Evans) throughout the DWTS episode.

A TikTok user shared a post pointing out that Hoying could be seen wearing a different hat in the background of each of his fellow contestants’ post-dance interviews. The viewer suggested this is likely a nod to Ryan Evans, who wore similar hats in the High School Musical films.

Tisdale starred in all three High School Musical films, which were released in 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.  She also portrayed the character in subsequent spinoff, 2011’s Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.

Despite being grateful for the gig, Tisdale has been open in the past about not necessarily wanting to reprise her role as Sharpay any time soon.

Lindsay Arnold is really impressed by how much Scott Hoying’s dancing has already improved in just two weeks of Dancing With the Stars. On Tuesday, September 23, Lindsay, 31, shared an Instagram Story of her daughters Sage, 4, and June, 2, copying the moves to her younger sister, Rylee Arnold, and her Pentatonix partner’s week […]

“I just feel like I wouldn’t be able to really do that again and give it justice,” she told Entertainment Tonight in August 2021.

Tisdale told the outlet that she was concerned about ruining the magic of her original stint as the character and she didn’t want to disappoint fans.

“I think at that moment in time, I was very unaware of myself and my surroundings, and I feel like that’s a big part of Sharpay,” Tisdale explained. “She is just not really aware, and so as I grew up and became more aware, I think that it’s just something that it wouldn’t be the same.”

Tisdale added, “It’s so good, and it’s like, for me, I would hate to ruin something that is perfect for that moment, and yeah, I don’t think I could go back to it.”

Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m.
