Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are continuing to surprise fans with their romance.

The “Dark Horse” singer and the former Canadian prime minister first sparked romance rumors over the summer when they were spotted on a date in Montreal, Canada. At the time of their first public outing, Perry had recently separated from her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom, in June. Meanwhile, Trudeau separated from his wife, Sophie Grégoire, after 18 years of marriage in 2023.

Shortly after they enjoyed a few date nights in Canada, a source told PEOPLE that Perry and Trudeau had an “instant connection” and had common interests. However, they initially paused their relationship as Perry performed across the world for her Lifetimes Tour.

Despite not being seen in public for a few months, Perry and Trudeau were photographed in September hugging and kissing on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara. A source later told PEOPLE that Trudeau had “been pursuing her since” their dates in Montreal.

“He even flew to California to see her during a tour break,” the insider shared. “They have an easy connection. She finds him attractive. He’s been very respectful.”

Trudeau and Perry sparked romance rumors in July 2025 after multiple “fantastic” outings together in Montreal

The “Last Friday Night” singer and the Canadian politician had their first public date at Le Violon in Montreal on July 28, 2025.

PEOPLE confirmed that Perry and Trudeau met with Chef Danny Smiles during the dinner and later thanked the kitchen staff.

“Katy and Justin seemed to have had a fantastic evening,” a rep for the restaurant shared with PEOPLE at the time. “They were super kind and friendly to the staff, and it was an absolute pleasure to have them at the restaurant.”

Prior to heading to the local restaurant, Perry and Trudeau went for a walk in Mount Royal Park with a dog before grabbing drinks at Taverne Atlantic.

Trudeau supported Perry at her Lifetimes Tour show in Montreal

Just two days after Trudeau and Perry grabbed drinks and dinner, he showed his support for her by attending her Lifetimes Tour performance at the Bell Centre in Montreal on July 30.

Trudeau was photographed smiling in the front row of a crowd while staring at the singer, per a photo shared on social media.

Perry kicked off the worldwide tour in support of her seventh studio album, 143, in April 2025 and is scheduled to perform a total of 91 shows until its conclusion on Dec. 7, 2025.

The two had an “instant connection” and bonded over their “common” interests

After Trudeau and Perry had multiple outings in Montreal, sources told PEOPLE that they shared an “instant connection” but could also face roadblocks because of their busy careers.

“They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes,” one source explained in August. “She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.”

Two of the “many things they can share” are their love of music and appreciation for optimism.

“Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult,” the insider shared. “Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities.”

Trudeau and ex-wife Grégoire co-parent three teenage children: Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien. Meanwhile, Perry is also a mom to daughter Daisy Dove, whom she welcomed with Bloom in 2020.

“For one thing, they each have an ex,” the source said. “So, duties are split in half. And long-distance relationships, while still hard, are possible for these two.”

Trudeau was “surprised” by the attention their dates received and preferred to keep their romance “more low-key”

Although both Trudeau and Perry are public figures, a source told PEOPLE that the politician wasn’t expecting his personal life to be such a topic of public conversation.

“Justin didn’t know so many people would find out about the private dinner,” an insider said in August. “He was also surprised by the international interest and how it went through the roof for days.”

The source continued, “As long as [media coverage] goes his way, then he’s fine. He would prefer it more low-key.”

Despite the attention their romance received, the source explained that the pair are “for sure attracted to each other on several levels and had a wonderful time together in Canada.”

“They discovered how they agree on many things and really enjoyed their encounter in Canada for as short a time as it was,” they said.

They initially paused their romance because of long-distance, but Trudeau kept “pursuing her”

Since Perry was in the midst of her worldwide Lifetimes Tour and fresh off her split from Bloom at the time of their first rendezvous, she reportedly wasn’t initially planning on committing to a serious relationship with Trudeau.

“They had a casual first get-to-know-you date,” a source told PEOPLE in August of their time in Montreal. “And although they have shared interests and plenty to talk about, dating just isn’t on her radar. She’s stayed in touch with Justin, but there are no current plans for another meet-up.”

However, a source told PEOPLE in October that Trudeau continued to court her.

“When she first hung out with Justin, she wasn’t looking to date, but they stayed in touch,” the insider explained. “They have many shared interests and a lot of talk about, but Katy was navigating too many things to even think about dating then.”

Despite Perry’s busy professional and personal life, Trudeau had “been pursuing her since” their Montreal dates and flew to California to see her. The source added that Perry and Trudeau have an “easy connection.”

Two months after the Grammy-nominated singer and the former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada sparked romance rumors, they confirmed their romance with a PDA session in September.

Perry and Trudeau were photographed kissing, cuddling and embracing while spending time together on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara. The photos were released on Oct. 11.

Around the time the photos were released, a Canadian source close to the political world told PEOPLE, “They have stayed in touch since the middle of summer but haven’t been able to spend that much time together, due mainly to her schedule.”

They continued, “Justin is also busy and both have family obligations. They have interests in common. Both are taking dating as it comes. But they are definitely into each other — and have been.”

Perry teased that she may not be “single” during an Oct. 13 concert

Although both Perry and Trudeau have kept quiet about their blossoming romance, Perry seemed to acknowledge the rumblings for the first time after the yacht photos surfaced. While the Teenage Dream singer took the stage at the O2 Arena in London on Oct. 13, she appeared to reference the romance.

A concertgoer posted a video on TikTok that showed a fan named Darren talking to her while she asked him what his sign said. The fan told Perry that his sign read, “I heard you’re single?”

“You heard I was single? That’s interesting,” Perry quipped as the audience cheered. Darren then revealed that his sign asked Perry to marry him.

“Are you kidding me? Not today!” Perry exclaimed. “You know you really should have asked me about 48 hours ago!”

A second video shared by another social media user showed Perry singing to the fan, “He’s just a little too late.”
