“I don’t want to be mean,” Bargatze told USA Today when discussing his hosting philosophy. “I don’t want to make someone sad that’s there.”
In an interview with TheWrap, he echoed the sentiment, saying that he wants to avoid making people in the audience feel uncomfortable.
“When the celebrities are there, you want to be able to see them afterwards and it not be weird. Jokes are naturally going to be kind of mean. That’s the only way it’s going to be funny,” he said. “We’re going to have jokes about shows, but I’m not trying to be, I don’t want to make anybody sad.”
And to CNN, he said something similar: “I would not want to do something that’s just inherently mean, and to really be mean to a person. That would break my heart if I found out anybody was really hurt by anything.”
