Cameron Mathison is sharing some rare comments on his separation from wife Vanessa.
Back in July 2024, the 56-year-old General Hospital actor announced that he and Vanessa, 58, were separating after 22 years of marriage. The two wed in 2002 and share two kids – son Lucas, 22, and daughter Leila, 19.
Keep reading to find out more…While appearing on Jennie Garth’s I Choose podcast on Monday (September 9), Cameron admitted that the split “was a surprise” for him.
“It was a tricky time when we separated and there [were] a lot of specific conditions that made it really tough,” the soap star said.
Months after announcing their separation, Cameron lost his home in the devastating L.A. wildfires in January 2025, which actually helped the former couple get to a better place.
“We had been separated for about a year and a half officially at that point — maybe a little bit longer — but [it] still felt very fresh,” Cameron explained.
He then noted that he and Vanessa are “still working through stuff” following their split, but moving in with his estranged wife after the first helped bridge the gap.
“We have a lot of love for each other, but there was also a lot of pain at that time. I really feel — I think I can speak for Vanessa as well, because we’ve talked about this — in that moment after the fire, I stayed in the kids’ room in her place,” Cameron said. “It was as if going through that together just erased a lot of the negativity and just kind of shortened that [post-breakup] timeline.”
He also said that he and Vanessa found “real place of love and care and support” in the aftermath of the fires.
“We were there for each other and cried and talked and hugged,” Cameron recalled. “Not in a, ‘Oh, we’re going to get back together kind of way.’ Just really close, nobody else knew what we were going through.”
