“I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back,” Gurinder said when asked about the original cast coming back. According to the director, the original movie’s cast is “aware” that a script is being developed for the sequel, but want to see the script before they sign on for the movie.

“Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes,” Gurinder told Deadline.

Gurinder said that the original film was about “lifting up girls and saying, ‘You can do and you can be anything you want even though society dictates what you can and can’t do,’ and that message is still relevant today, even though we have women and women’s soccer sides so huge around the world.” She told the publication that she hopes for the sequel to be just as “joyous” as the first movie.

Gurinder also shared that she’s working “collaboratively” on the script with Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. women’s national soccer team.

If you didn’t know, another nostalgic sports movie has a sequel on the way!
