Diana Ross, ABBA, and Tiffany get a big bump from Stranger Things S5 premiere


As we saw with Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill in S4, Stranger Things has given a well-deserved boost to some older songs. Upside Down by Diana Ross was used in the S5 premiere and as a result, the song received 953,000 official on-demand streams over the first four tracking days of this charting week (November 28 – December 1). When the song was originally released in 1980, it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as the Billboard Disco and Soul charts.

During the same four day period, Tiffany’s 1987 cover of I Think We’re Alone Now had a 289% increase from the week before with 1.3 million streams and hit #1 on the Shazam music chart. She was only 15 when she recorded the song, which spent two weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 chart. The music video was filmed during her mall tour.

ABBA released the song Fernando in 1976. It was one of their most popular songs and hit #1 in 13 countries. After the Stranger Things premiere, the song receieved 615,000 streams.

Mr. Sandman by the Chordettes was #1 on all three of Billboard’s charts when it was released in 1954. In 2002, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Last week it received 564,000 streams.

Maya Hawke’s character Robin used a snipped of Rockin’ Robin as the theme song for her radio show, which was enough to get the Michael Jackson cover 187,000 streams last week. It was originally released in 1972 as the second single from his debut solo album. It was #1 on the Cash Box singles chart, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard soul singles chart.
