I’m a Stomach and Side Sleeper Who Used to Wake Up with Neck Pain — This Unusual Pillow Changed That

I spend most nights sleeping on my stomach. And after years of searching, I finally found a pillow that doesn’t make my neck and shoulders hurt in the morning.

While I sometimes switch between stomach and side sleeping, the Pillow Cube Side Cube Deluxe is the first bed pillow I’ve tested that feels comfortable all night, no matter which sleeping position I’m in. I’ve lost count of how many pillows I’ve tried over the years, but the Pillow Cube is at least the fourth pillow I’ve tried that has a unique shape and texture aimed specifically at side sleepers. It’s also priced better than several others I’ve tried.

Other pillows for side sleepers I’ve tried are either shaped like macaroni noodles or standard pillows with a valley down the middle for your neck. In contrast, the Pillow Cube is a 5-inch thick rectangle, which made me immediately skeptical of its comfort when I took it out of the box after the brand sent me one to test. I quickly found that the secret is in the material.

The pillow is made of a proprietary memory foam that’s thick and ultra-spongy. Most side-sleeper pillows I’ve tested were also made of memory foam, but they always had a hard, unforgiving texture. It’s easy to push your palm deep into the Pillow Cube, which makes it a dream to rest on. Your head sinks into the bulk of the pillow’s generous size while the edges stay up to cradle your neck.

Another plus I’ve noticed is that my head doesn’t sweat as much when I’m using this pillow. I’m a very hot sleeper, and my testing period with this pillow was during the summer, so I’d say the brand’s promise that it’s also cooling is justified. It all goes back to the pillow’s cloud-like blue foam that I noticed was lined with air holes when I removed the included zip-up pillow cover.

The Pillow Cube had a chemical-like odor when I first took it out of the box — it reminded me of the smell from boxed mattresses I’ve used — but that faded after a few hours. The brand also offers the pillow in a smaller base model and several cute kids’ pillows that double as plushies. I also tested its new Travel Cube pillow, which has the same texture and thickness as the Side Cube but in a compact 16-inch-wide body.

The Pillow Cube Side Cube Deluxe is $110 — a fair price in my opinion because of the effective proprietary filling. Check out a few more of the brand’s unique pillows below.
