Mother-in-Law Pushes New Mom to Feed 6-Month-Old a ‘Stick of Butter’ to ‘Help Him Sleep’

NEED TO KNOW

  • A user wrote on Reddit that her mother-in-law is pushing her to feed her 6-month-old son a “stick of butter”
  • The woman said her son’s grandmother believes he’s “sugar addicted” from all the fruits he has been eating
  • The mother-in-law also insists the baby should have a meat-based diet, which she disagrees with

A new mother is feeling overwhelmed about her mother-in-law’s advice on how to feed her baby.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that her child’s grandmother insists on her feeding him a “stick of butter” to help with his night-time snooze, among other things.

“My 6 month old started solids last week, it has been so lovely so far and he loves it,” she explains. “I have given him banana, papaya, strawberries, chicken, squash, eggs… we are definitely exploring a lot.”

“I share videos and pictures with his grandma and all she manages to say is how he already looks ‘sugar addicted’ from the fruit and that I should give him pure butter,” she adds.

The poster said that her mother-in-law believes her grandbaby “needs the fat,” adding that “it will help him sleep longer.”

While the poster “agrees” that the little one needs more fat in his diet, she is getting tired of her mother-in-law’s constant recommendations.

“She also keeps sending me instagram videos of this ‘meat based nutritionist’ saying babies should have a meat based diet. I completely disagree and think babies should have a healthy broad diet,” the Redditor writes.

While the daughter-in-law tried to “gently” state her views, her mother-in-law “doesn’t get the point.”

“I told her that babies tend to like things sweet tasting because breastmilk is sweet,” she recalls. “And she said ‘I think steak can be pretty sweet. ?????'”

“It’s making me feel like I am not doing the best for my baby because I haven’t yet given him lots of meat, which I do plan to introduce but again… we are just starting,” she ends. “Have anyone ever given baby pure butter? is the a real recommendation? please advise!”

Responding to the post, many readers advised the Reddit user to set her boundaries with a little more force.

“Time to be less gentle. I am in a cranky mood.,” one person wrote.

A second added, “You are under no obligation to make her understand your food choices for your kid. And it’s causing you distress. So set a clear boundary. Tell her you don’t need to hear her opinions on how you feed your child.”

The user went on to state that if the mother-in-law continued with her behavior, the new mom should “stop sending pics or videos.”

Meanwhile, another person insisted the poster should get her husband involved.

“Tell your husband to shut his mother up or you will and it won’t be pleasant,” the reader wrote. “I did this with my own mother but husband was getting irked about her freaking out over how we introduced solids and BLW.”
