NEED TO KNOW
- A couple agreed on a baby name as they wait to welcome their first child
- However, the soon-to-be mom later found out the name is the same as her partner’s ex-girlfriend’s
- She turned to Reddit for advice on how to handle the situation
A soon-to-be mom was left stunned after learning the baby name that she and her partner agreed on is linked to his ex-girlfriend — and his family knew the entire time.
The 27-year-old turned to Reddit for advice on the situation, explaining that she has been with her 30-year-old boyfriend for three years, and she’s 32 weeks pregnant. Early into the pregnancy, they agreed on the name “Lila,” which she loved immediately, calling it “soft, simple, warm.”
“Yesterday, his sister posted an old throwback picture of him and his ex on her IG story with the caption: ‘Back when he and Lila were obsessed with each other lol,'” she wrote. “My stomach dropped. I messaged her immediately asking, ‘Wait, his ex’s name was Lila???’ She left me on read.”

“When my boyfriend got home, I asked him calmly. He went silent, then admitted yes, his ex of five years was named Lila,” she continued. “The girl he almost proposed to. The girl he cried over for months after the breakup.”
When she asked her boyfriend why he would let her name their daughter after his ex, he said that he “didn’t think it mattered” and that “it’s just a name.”
“But I know why he really did it, because when I suggested it, nostalgia hit him like a truck and he didn’t tell me,” she wrote. “Worse: his entire family knew and didn’t say a thing.”
Now, the expectant woman said she “can’t look at the baby items with her name on them without wanting to cry.”
She feels “tricked” and “stupid,” and is unsure how to move forward.
“I feel like this man let me imprint his ex onto my daughter,” she wrote. “He said I’m ‘overreacting’ and refuses to apologize.”
She then asked Reddit if his actions are “breakup-worthy” or if she was just being “hormonal.”
People in the comments agreed her boyfriend should have been upfront about the name, suggesting she pick a new one and move on.
“The baby isn’t born yet so just pick a different name and his family is terrible his sister did that on purpose and obviously doesn’t like you. The post was inappropriate and the family clearly wishes the ex wasn’t an ex. change the baby’s name and co-parent,” one person commented.
“Baby isn’t named yet and you aren’t married yet. Yet it is a great time to rethink things,” another person wrote.
