Mia McClain and her fiancé chose Feb. 8 for their wedding for a meaningful reason: it’s her fiancé’s late grandmother’s birthday, honoring a woman who played a huge role in his life. Bonus: it falls on a Sunday, perfect for their Jewish wedding ceremony.

Since selecting the date, the New York City-based couple, who got engaged in October 2024, have been hard at work planning their Miami, Fla., wedding. But it wasn’t until last month that McClain realized something else significant was happening on the same day: the Super Bowl.

“I found out at a friend’s party about a month ago when she mentioned she’d be missing her friend’s Super Bowl party to attend my wedding,” the actress, 26, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “When I put two and two together, my first thought was that it might be a lot harder than I initially expected to make sure it’s an unplugged ceremony.”

“This was all made funnier by a fellow party guest (who maybe had too much to drink) taking it upon himself to lecture me as to why a Super Bowl Sunday wedding was a terrible idea,” she adds.

Despite the potential clash, McClain says rescheduling never really crossed her mind, especially since no one in her immediate circle is a big football fan.

“My fiancé and I work in the arts, as do most of our friends,” she says. “And in my opinion, if invited guests would rather opt to stay home to watch the game, they’re well within their rights to do so! I was/am just excited to celebrate with everyone who wants to be there.”

However, her plans were thrown into question when it was announced that Bad Bunny would be headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

She was gutted at the thought of potentially missing his performance and worried about taking away the chance for wedding attendees who are fans to see him live.

“Honestly, more of a ‘what if’ dilemma,” she says. “It’s a lot of work to reschedule a wedding, especially after we’ve planned almost all of it. Super Bowl is every year — a wedding only happens once!”

Her fiancé, a Broadway producer and Venezuelan Cuban from Miami, has found the scheduling conflict amusing. He’s unbothered by the clash, even though he loves Bad Bunny just as much as McClain does.

As she puts it, “He’s more invested in making sure the wedding itself is perfect than in planning it around a football game.”

“I just found it to be so ironic that my wedding (into a Venezuelan Cuban family, no less) was directly conflicting with a huge American/Latin cultural moment, and that the headliner happened to be an artist I love so much,” she adds.

Amid the dilemma, McClain took to TikTok to share the update and gauge her followers’ thoughts on whether she should reschedule. To her surprise, the video went viral, racking up over 400,000 views and hundreds of comments.

“Most people have been suggesting to project or stream the halftime show as part of the reception!” she says. “There’s also a good handful of questions as to why it’s on a Sunday, why I’d pick that date, and people urging me to cancel it or reschedule. For the most part, the responses have been actually quite helpful, funny and positive.”

“Per people’s suggestions, we’re in talks with our wedding planner (Events Mastery by Romina) and our venue to see if we can indeed stream the halftime show during the reception,” she adds. “I’m really hopeful and excited that it’ll create a very fun and special opportunity for our friends and family to enjoy the Bad Bunny performance with us, and I’m excited to share that aspect of our wedding on TikTok as well.”

Although the couple doesn’t plan to cancel their wedding entirely, McClain says she already has a backup plan.

“I’d elope LOL. Maybe on a random weekday in Central Park, and then go get takeout with our immediate family afterward,” she says of her hypothetical alternative.
