“Ruin the Friendship” is based on Taylor‘s high school days, and centers around a crush on a friend. She wishes she opted to “ruin the friendship” rather than regret not knowing what could have been.
Susan agrees that the song is about her late son, telling The Tennessean it brought back happy memories.
“After all this time, she hasn’t forgotten about him. She’s keeping his name alive,” she said.
“They were really good friends. That’s rare these days. They hung out at her house a lot. They were always joking around with each other.”
Jeff died suddenly in 2010 at the age of 21, and Taylor performed at his funeral. She also thanked him in a speech at the BMI Country Awards, explaining that she used to play her music for him first.
