Steve Martin is reminiscing about the opportunities he had to work alongside Diane Keaton.
The legendary actress — known for her roles in iconic films such as The Godfather, First Wives Club, and Annie Hall — died in California on Saturday, Oct. 11, PEOPLE confirmed. She was 79.
Having starred as Keaton’s husband in 1991’s Father of the Bride, Martin, 80, was among the many celebrities to pay tribute following the news of her death. On Sunday, Oct. 12, he shared an Instagram post revealing that they had worked together back when they were both acting students at Santa Ana College in southern California.
“This playbill is from a 1964 college production of Carousel. Diane ‘Hall’ (Keaton) is the lead; I’m a stage hand,” Martin captioned his Instagram post.
He had previously shared a black and white photo of Keaton on X with a quote from her 1977 movie Annie Hall as the caption.
“Loved! ‘La dee da, la dee da,’ ” Martin wrote.
The Pink Panther star also remembered Keaton on Instagram as he reshared quotes from a 2021 chat she and Martin Short had with Interview Magazine.
“Who’s sexier, me or Steve Martin?” Short asked. “I mean, you’re both idiots,” Keaton replied.
Amused by the exchange, Martin captioned his tribute, “Don’t know who first posted this, but it sums up our delightful relationship with Diane.”

Keaton had enrolled in college to study drama before dropping out to pursue a theater career in New York. In 1968, she was cast in Broadway’s Hair as an understudy.
She then found fame in the 1970s with her role in The Godfather movies and frequent collaborations with director Woody Allen. The actress — who went on to have a lengthy acting career — last posted on Instagram in April, showing herself alongside her dog, Reggie.
Following her unexpected death on Oct.11, a spokesperson told PEOPLE, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”
Keaton is survived by her daughter, Dexter and her son, Duke.
