Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron series, debuted at $33.5 million this weekend, well under the pre-weekend estimates of $45-50 million. That’s over $10 million less than 2010’s Tron: Legacy, the previous installment in the series, and the budget for this one was $180 million.

But Tron was not the only new film to open softly this weekend. The Channing Tatum starring Roofman pulled in $8 million for second place, in the lower range of projections. It only cost $19 million to produce, so a modest opening does not sting too badly.

Meanwhile, the Jennifer Lopez vehicle Kiss of Spider Woman only managed a $1 million opening, which is below the lowest expectations going into the weekend, but that was on a $34 million budget.

Soul on Fire, a faith-based inspirational story from Sony, came in fifth place with a $2.8 million take in 1700+ theaters. Rounding out the top five was One Battle After Another, with an additional $6.8 million, and Gabby’s Dollhouse, with an additional $3.4 million. OBAA has made $56.3 million and $125 million internationally.

The Rock’s The Smashing Machine fell 70% from its opening weekend to 8th place with $1.8 million.

Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt premiered in six theaters with a $25k per theater average; it expands next weekend.
