- A woman says her grown daughter’s unemployed boyfriend has lived in her home rent-free for about a year
- She said she recently gave him an ultimatum — “find a job or move out”
- The woman shared her story on a community forum, where a number of commenters said they thought she is partly to blame for allowing the situation to go on for so long
A woman says that her daughter’s boyfriend has been living in her home rent-free for a year — and she’s had it.
The 48-year-old mom detailed her story on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?,” a place where people can go to seek input and advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman explained that her 22-year-old daughter has a 21-year-old boyfriend who moved into her home “around a year ago.”
“What started as staying over every now and again changed to him fully moving in. Like one day he came and never left,” she said.
The original poster (OP) said that — unlike her daughter, who is employed — the boyfriend does not have a job and seems “happy to stay at home all day doing nothing.” She also said that he doesn’t contribute to any of the household chores, and that she cooks for both him and her daughter nightly.
“Neither pay any rent or any other bills,” she continued.

“I have told them that going forward, they will have to buy all their own food, cook it themselves, do all their own laundry, etc. I’m hoping this will give him the kick up the backside that he needs,” she said, adding that she feels as though she has “been taken advantage of for far too long.”
She went on to say that she has given the boyfriend a deadline of three months to “find a job or move out.”

The woman’s fellow Redditors unanimously supported her decision to give her daughter’s boyfriend an ultimatum — though many also said they thought she was at least partly responsible for her current situation.
“Some kid just moved himself into your place, and you haven’t even had a proper conversation about it?” one person asked, adding, “Make it very clear that if he intends to stay, he must contribute financially and domestically. Don’t be a doormat.”

“They should pay rent, and chores should be divided until they move out. Stop supporting the deadbeats — and I am including your daughter in that statement,” someone else said.
Another person agreed, adding, “As parents, we are creating adults who contribute to society. Charge your daughter rent and quit [coddling] her.”
