I saw this made Popbase so I thought why not post it here too?
BBC has also posted an article about it, highlighting it’s connection to Power Rangers
Japanese series that inspired Power Rangers to end after 50 years – reports https://t.co/QHLWuQFQTN

The news was originally reported by Oricon which said the news has been confirmed with insiders from TV Asahi (the station that broadcasts Super Sentai) that the show would be ending at the conclusion of the current season which ends early next year. Supposedly the reason is that it underperforms all of Asahi and Toei’s (the production company) other properties. Asahi and Toei have made no formal announcement on this.
As stated in the BBC article, Super Sentai is a Japanese children’s series that has run for 50 years. It’s basically about a team of heroes (sentai means squadron) fighting villains who are trying to destroy the world. Every season the show is renewed with new characters, a new setting, new costume and villain designs and most importantly a slate of new toys and other products with the new designs on them to sell to children. It is really ingrained in Japanese culture because everyone knows about it and most (especially men and boys) have a season they consider ‘theirs’ from their childhood. You can see countless references to it in Japanese media, basically anything involving teams having colors and stuff. And yes it is best known in the west from the action sequences in Power Rangers.
In recent years it has been losing in popularity and toy sales to the shows that run in the same morning block that are also produced by Asahi and Toei and doomsayers have been around for years predicting every season would be it’s last. Of course those people are around now with the sales charts, loving this moment.
But is it really ending?
As I said no one has made an official announcement about anything, everything being reported are rumors. However there is one fact showing that this is not truly the end and that is that toy listings have already begun for the season starting next year. Also I’m not sure if this can be considered a fact or not but these shows begin filming months before they air and it was reported back in September that filming started for next year as usual. If these articles had come out earlier this year or if they were about next year being the last season the I might have believed them but at this point I don’t believe that the series is truly ending. BUT I do believe that is AN end, the end of them using the Super Sentai name.
Wait what?
Yes, all of this is over a rebrand. The rumors are flowing that maybe the series will not run on TV Asahi anymore (seems unlikely), there are also rumors that they want to change the name because they have an agreement with Hasbro/Power Rangers not to promote as Super Sentai outside of Japan, or that they want to have a new globally friendly name to promote with overseas and that it’s actually been planned for many years. I personally believe a lot of this is being done to drum up interest in the next season, soooo many people were talking about this when the first reports came out.
So in conclusion it’s ending but it’s also not and in the future you might be able to watch the current season streaming in your country!
