Weekend Box Office: ‘Black Phone 2’ Grabs #1 Spot

Black Phone 2 was expected to open in first place at the box office this weekend, and it did with $26.5 million, only beating out the opening weekend of the first film by $3.5 million. It did bring in an additional $15.5 million globally, for a total take of $42 million on a $30 million budget. The film received a B Cinemascore, just under its predecssor’s B+.

The only other new wide release of the weekend was Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune, which collected $6.2 million for third place. The film is well-reviewed, and picked up a B Cinemascore, but is not turning out much of an audience.

Tron: Ares came in second place with $11.1 million, falling 66% from opening weekend. Although it has made $54.6 million domestically and $103 million worldwide in two weekends, it cost $180 just to produce the film, nevermind what was spent on marketing.

One Battle After Another and Roofman were virtually tied for 4th place, with OBAA bringing in $3.75 million to Roofman‘s $3.7 million. OBAA has brought in about $162 million globally, while Roofman has brought in $16 million worldwide.

After the Hunt flopped in its first weekend of expanded release, only bringing in $1.56 million for $1.77 million total box office. In limited release, Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident brought in $68k from three venues in New York City and Los Angeles, averaging $22k per theater.
