The Problem with Fantastical Racism | Breakdown by YouTuber Princess Weekes

(OP note: while Avatar and Star Trek are referenced in the thumbnail, I did not tag them as they are either not mentioned or mentioned in passing.)

YouTuber Princess Weekes did a breakdown of “fantastical racism”, or the use of fantasy/sci-fi races as stand-ins for real racism and bigotry. She takes a closer look at how it’s presented through various media, from novels to comic books to film and television. There are no timestamps that I could find, but I did my best:

• 0:00-7:50 — Introduction and Thesis (with references to Frieren, Game of Thrones, and My Hero Academia)

• 7:51-12:39 — True Blood, Vampires, and the Depiction of Monsters

• 12:40-23:29 — X-Men, Israel/Palestine, and the Catch-All of “The Other”

• 23:30-28:25 — Defiance and Racism/Bigotry: Now with Aliens! (with references to War of the Worlds, Men In Black, Starship Troopers, and Ender’s Game)

• 28:26-38:00 — Lord of the Rings: Let’s Talk About the Orcs… (with references to Star Wars; after the timestamp, the remainder of the video is an advertisement and credits)

ONTD, what examples of “fantastical racism” do you think were done well? Which were done poorly?
