Weekend Box Office: ‘Fantastic Four’ Holds on to Top Spot

The Fantastic Four: First Steps easily held on to first place at the box office this weekend, but unfortunately, its weekend haul fell a sharp 66% to $40 million, much lower than anticipated by box office analysts. This was unexpected in part because the film has good word of mouth, decent reviews, and no new competition. It also dropped steeply internationally, so its global total gross is only at $368 million after two weekends of release. The film will do better in the end than a couple other recent Marvel releases – Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* – but this is not a good sign for superhero films.

In second place was The Bad Guys 2 with a $22.8 million domestic take. The animated sequel performed very similarly to the first installment.

In third place was The Naked Gun, a slapstick comedy, with a $17 million haul. This is exactly what the film was expected to make, and on a $42 million budget, it’s a good start for a film in a theatrical genre that is all but dead. The good reviews and critical acclaim show promise for the rest of its run.

In fourth was Superman, which pulled in $13.9 million, and has made $551.2 million globally to date. Just behind it was Jurassic World: Rebirth, which made $8.4 million, bringing its global numbers to $766 million. In this post? Lots of blockbusters that are not going to hit a billion dollars.

In other new release news, Together brought in $6.8 million over the weekend, and $10.2 million since its opening on Wednesday night. The film cost Neon $17 million at Sundance, one of the biggest deals at the festival, and started off pretty strong. Audiences only gave it a C+ on CinemaScore, but that is quite common for the genre.
